Watch: Lazy river turns into a raging torrent; ‘holy smokes!’

When Thomas Nowicki began filming the Moose River in Vermont, it was a slow-moving (albeit swollen) river. Moments later, he was in for a huge surprise as it turned into a raging torrent.

Nowicki explained the February 24 event to Cerdoviralsaying: “Most days when I walk through Saint Johnsbury, Vermont, I sit on a rock on Elm Street and get the same image of the Moose River, upstream from where it joins the Passumpsic River.

“Today I did that and then decided to take a little video of the swollen river and all the ice on it, when suddenly a raging torrent from an ice jam upstream came crashing down, just a moment after hitting the record! ”

Nowicki’s reaction to the outcome of the ice dam breaking says it all: “Oh my God!”

"It continued like this for 5 or 6 minutes before stabilizing and filling completely with ice," Nowicki said. "I've never seen anything like it!"
