Wednesdayโ€™s Campaign Round-Up, 9.1.21

Today's delivery of news related to the campaign from around the country.

* As expected, Wisconsin Republicans yesterday agreed to spend up to $ 680,000 in taxpayer money to investigate the 2020 state presidential election, despite no evidence of wrongdoing.

* In California's impeachment election, a new SurveyUSA poll found that a narrow majority of voters in the Golden State wanted to keep incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom in office. A month ago, the same pollster found the Democratic governor on track to lose the recall election.

* Chris Sununu, Republican Governor of New Hampshire, has yet to say whether he intends to run for Senate next year, but a new survey from St. Anselm College shows him leading Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan in a hypothetical showdown, 49 percent to 41 percent. It's the kind of result that would pretty much guarantee camera GOP control after the 2022 cycle.

* The most aggressive political campaign in the country right now has nothing to do with an election and everything to do with taxes: The Washington Post reported that a "torrent of political groups," encompassing drug makers, big banks, tech titans, big retailers, and oil and gas giants, are preparing to derail elements of the $ 3.5 trillion economic agenda from President Joe Biden.

* How serious is AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler about Senate Democrats circumventing obstructionist House rules and passing the Richard L. Trumka PRO Act? She Said yesterday, "Elected officials, if they are not listening, is when the elections end up having consequences."

* As expected, with former Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer unexpectedly ending his 2022 campaign, Republicans are gathering behind State Attorney General Derek Schmidt in the gubernatorial race next year. Acting Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly will seek a second term.

* And while it's disheartening that this is even news, former House Speaker Paul Ryan granted yesterday, referring to the 2020 presidential election, "It wasn't tampered with. It wasn't stolen. Donald Trump lost the election. Joe Biden won the election. It's really clear." If the former president publicly lashes out at Ryan again, at least we will know why.
