โ€˜You made a differenceโ€™: ABC11โ€™s Troubleshooter story on unclaimed money brings โ€˜torrentโ€™ of claims

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- On January 5, 2023, ABC11 troubleshooter Diane Wilson filed a business owner who asked for help to get his money after he filed a claim with the unclaimed funds from North Carolina.

On Friday, the North Carolina Treasurer's office sent him this email about complaint responses after his story aired and was posted on abc11.com. It says in part:

"Your segment about the man who was having a hard time getting his last $15,000 of nccash.com triggered a torrent of claims filed. Our count of people filing claims for money jumped 2,000 to 3,000 above normal after their story broke. You made a difference, and we always appreciate the coverage."

What You Should Know About North Carolina Unclaimed Funds

North Carolina has over a billion dollars waiting to be claimed. It's money that could belong to you.

Unclaimed money is held in the state's Unclaimed Property Division account until claimed by its rightful owner through the required documents.

Claims are processed in the order they are received. The normal processing time is approximately 90 days, the website indicates.

Once your claim is assigned to a processor, you will be contacted if additional information or documents are needed.

You will be notified by email when your claim payment is approved.

ABC11 Troubleshooter Helps North Carolina Man Claim $15,000

The man in the story, Juan Chambers, said he lost track of several checks during his move. Despite losing the actual checks, he had copies of the lost checks.

"I went to the bank and asked them about it and then the bank said, 'okay, we sent it to the state.'

The bank sent the money to the state because the North Carolina Treasurer's office has an unclaimed funds department, where the money is turned over by a company that did business with someone in the state. When that company can no longer contact the person, they are required by law to send the money to the state treasurer for safekeeping.

The troubleshooter helped Chambers get $15,000 that was waiting in the North Carolina unclaimed funds account.
